Call for Proposals: "Deconstructing the Gods: Towards a Post-Religious Criticism"

The Third Annual Brooklyn College Graduate English Conference will be held April 10, 2009, Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY. The topic is "Deconstructing the Gods: Towards a Post-Religious Criticism," and proposals are being accepted now through January 31, 2010. Details about the conference, topics, and submission guidelines are below.

If one were asked to provide a single explanation for the growth of English studies in the later nineteenth century, one could do worse than reply, 'the failure of religion.' -- Terry Eagleton

Literature would begin wherever one no longer knows who writes and who signs the narrative of the call - and of the "Here I Am"- between the absolute Father and Son. -- Derrida

Welcome back!

We hope you've had a great and relaxing winter break. We've been working hard over the break to get plans in place for the winter and spring terms, and we're excited to share them.

First: Some Bookkeeping
Has your group's leadership changed from the fall? We'd really like to be in touch with the current leaders of your group - and you can help us do that. Just send us an email with the names and email addresses of your new leaders (and let us know which leaders are cycling off), and we'll get things updated for you.

Winter Recruitment for Your Group
The beginning of the winter term is as important as the beginning of the fall quarter for recruiting new members for your group. This is a great time to take on your campus with an armload of catchy flyers (check out the Flyer Exchange for some ideas), set up a table (on the quad or in a student union), and encourage your members to bring their friends. A kick-off meeting or social can also help bring in new interested students.

Andrew Lovley's Secular Invocation

The following is the text of the invocation given by Andrew Lovley, president of the Southern Maine Association of Secular Humanists at the University of Southern Maine, at the 2009 inauguration ceremony for new city officials in South Portland, Maine, on Dec. 7.
