The Ledge Activity Packet
The Ledge is a 2011 film by Matthew Chapman for which the tag line is...
A thriller in which a battle of philosophies between a fundamentalist Christian and an atheist escalates into a lethal battle of wills.
One of the primary focuses in the course of the movie is the dialogue surrounding the authenticity of religion. It is a significant part of the foundation for the entire plot. But what separates this film from other works involving similar material is that in The Ledge the atheist is actually the protagonist, which is truly an oddity in American cinema.
The film features an all-star cast including Patrick Wilson (Watchmen, Phantom of the Opera, The A-Team), Charlie Hunnam (Cold Mountain, Children of Men), Liv Tyler (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Empire Records), and Oscar-Nominee Terrance Howard (Iron Man, Mr. Holland's Opus, Hustle & Flow, and Crash).
Matthew Chapman has helped the Secular Student Alliance arrange an enormous discount for groups wanting to screen the movie at their school. This can be done in a number of different ways:
- As a fundraiser for your group
- As an exercise to bring the religion discussion to the forefront of your campus
- In connection with a debate or panel
- Just something fun to do!
How To Make This Happen
SSA affiliates can procure rights to show the film for $250/screening. IFC films will ship you a DVD in a protective case along with a backup DVD. While IFC will pay for the shipping to your group, your group will need to cover return shipping of all materials, which comes out to around $23.
To set up a screening, interested groups should contact Justin DiPietro with IFC films at firstname.lastname@example.org or (646)273-7211.
