SSA Hiring Part-time, Southern California Campus Organizer

The Secular Student Alliance is seeking applicants for a part-time Student Campus Organizer (SCO). This is an hourly position with a high degree of independence and responsibility.

The ideal candidate will be a current college student, with experience in atheist, freethought or humanist activism. Someone with experience leading or helping to lead a student group would be an especially strong candidate. She or he will have excellent communication skills, including speaking and writing. He or she will enjoy collaborating with people of different ages, ethnic groups, sexual orientations, and philosophical or political beliefs.

The SCO will help organize and support students who do not see theism as the source of morality--this includes atheists, agnostics, humanists, rationalists and other non-theists. The SCO duties will include working in person and remotely with student groups on campuses in the Southern California area to improve their operations, provide them with resources and network them with each other and the broader secular movement. The SCO will also work to start groups on campuses without groups via flyering, tabling and networking. The position will involve some traveling, public speaking, record keeping, lots of phone and email communication, resource development for groups and more.

The SCO will be willing to work 15 to 20 hours each week, often on evenings and sometimes weekends, and will set this position as a high priority. Accommodations can be made for exam weeks and other busy times, as long as ample advanced warning is given. The position pays $10 an hour. She or he will be willing to travel to campuses located
in Southern California on a regular basis. All travel will be covered by the SSA. He or she will be able to provide strong work and activism references. She or he will be willing to answer phone calls and e-mails promptly, unless on pre-arranged leave.

The SCO will work very closely with our full-time Senior Campus Organizer. The SCO will work in the Southern California area. The SSA is headquartered in Albany, NY. Most communication with the SSA will be via telephone, instant messenger and e-mail. However, the SCO will need to travel to Albany annually. We will work to ensure that this travel does not interrupt the SCO's academic schedule. The SCO must be available to travel to our next conference at Harvard, April 20-22 (www.thenewhumanism.org). As with all travel, all expenses will be covered by the Secular Student Alliance.

This position is being funded by Atheists United (www.atheistsunited.org) of Los Angeles. The SCO must attend their monthly board meetings held at 9 a.m. on the fourth Sunday of the month in Hollywood, CA.

There are many intangible benefits to this position. You will interact with many intelligent, creative, and stimulating people from all over the country and other parts of the world. You will have the option to do at least some of the work in the comfort of your own home. You will have the opportunity to make enormous progress in furthering freethought and humanist goals. You will gain job experience involving more responsibility and independence than most jobs for college students offer. Finally, the SCO position is a potential springboard to an ongoing career in the freethought and humanist movement.

The SSA hopes to hire a SCO in late March 2007 and have him or her start organizing in April of 2006.

Our mission is to organize, unite, educate and serve students and student communities that promote the ideals of scientific and critical inquiry, democracy, secularism, and human-based ethics. The best candidates will have a passionate, personal desire to see the realization of this mission.

The SSA was founded in 2000 and is a registered 501(c)(3) educational non-profit. You can learn more about the SSA at www.secularstudents.org.
