Campus Visits

This article originally appeared as part of SSA eNews No. 10 - My Struggle with Disbelief, Part 2

The SSA has recently been organizing in New York, northern Kentucky and in the Southwest.

SSA Campus Organizer recently visited a number of colleges around Albany, NY. Among the schools she visited were:

  1. The State University of New York-Albany Uptown Campus
  2. The State University of New York-Albany Downtown Campus
  3. Siena College
  4. The State University of New York-Empire
  5. Union College
  6. Williams College (in Western Massachusetts)
  7. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
  8. Russell Sage College

SSA material was posted in university dormitories, academic buildings, individual classrooms, and both inside and outside announcement boards. Each school was papered with 100 SSA fliers.

Additionally, Alison was interviewed by Duncan Crary of the Institute for Humanist Studies (IHS). IHS is a major contributor to the Secular Student Alliance. Our interview will air on the IHS podcast titled Humanist Network News. (ihs.libsyn.com). IHS was instrumental in this trip, and our warmest appreciation is extended to Larry Jones who allowed us to use the IHS office to make close to a thousand fliers, to Duncan Crary for his generous hospitality, and to Marty, Tim, Matt, and Shannon for being so welcoming. Thank you one and all.

Students at Union College have a freethought group in the works, and Alison intends to be in touch with these students about official affiliation with the SSA. While she was on the winsome Union Campus she located the building where this group holds its meetings and strategically placed SSA information contiguous to their room. At Williams College, Alison was approached by interested students as she was distributing fliers. We have already received a request for information from students at this school. It will be very interesting to see what groups and connections develop out of this pleasant visit.

In addition, Alison recently traveled to Kentucky to flyer three schools in that area. She visited:
1) Northern Kentucky University
2) University of Kentucky
3) Xavier University (in Cincinnati)

We're happy to report that we now have a group running at Northern Kentucky. Edwin Kagin of American Atheists and Alison met with a professor at this school and then Alison put the professor in touch with an interested student.

August Brunsman recently hung flyers in Tucson, AZ and San Diego, CA. Specifically, he flyered:

1) University of Arizona
2) San Diego State University
3) San Diego Mesa College
4) University of California-San Diego

We have been contacted by interested students at San Diego State University and San Deigo Meas College. We also made contact with a fledgling group we were formerly unaware of at UC San Diego. The group is called The Atheist, Agnostic and Free-Thinkers Society. We look forward to welcoming them to the SSA family.
