Secular Student Alliance Members & Affiliates
The Secular Student Alliance sees a lot of confusion when it comes to ways that people can become a part of the organization. What does it mean to join? How do you become a member? How are groups involved as opposed to individuals?
There are two main ways to get involved with the Secular Student Alliance. Any individual person, regardless of age or student status, can join the SSA as a member. A student group can get involved with the SSA by applying to become an affiliate. Read on to learn the differences between the two and what it all means!
Anyone, student or non-student, can become a member of the Secular Student Alliance. Becoming a member is free for students. Nonstudents can become members by paying a $35/year membership fee. Being a member gives you voting rights in our Board of Directors elections each year. You are also eligible to run for the Board of Directors, and you receive discounts to attend our annual conference. Read our Bylaws for more details.
Membership in the Secular Student Alliance is non-exclusive and must be renewed every year (except for life memberships).
As the Secular Student Alliance is a 501(c)(3) educational public charity, all membership dues are tax deductible within the United States.
Student groups on high school and college campuses, recognized by their institutions and in agreement with our minimum statement, are eligible to affiliate with the Secular Student Alliance. Affiliation is free and provides the student group with access to our Group Services. Affiliation is non-exclusive, but requires the group to renew each semester - this ensures that our records and affiliate listings are accurate and up-to-date.
Individuals who are members of a Secular Student Alliance affiliate group are not automatically members of the national Secular Student Alliance. We encourage these individuals to join the Alliance as members: getting the students we serve involved in the organization is beneficial to everyone! In particular, we encourage alumni of these groups to "pay it forward" by becoming members and supporting the new generation of students.
