National Leadership Council

The Secular Student Alliance National Leadership Council is a select group of students and recent alumni who are chosen annually based on exceptional leadership shown over the previous academic year. These students are selected by the SSA Campus Organizing team to provide insight, guidance, and support to the national Secular Student Alliance, and to act as exemplars of activism and leadership to their fellow students.

If you are a current SSA leader and want to contact the National Leadership Council for advice or support, they can be reached at NLC@secularstudents.org

2016-2017 Secular Student Alliance National Leadership Council

Matt Enloe is a J.D. Candidate at the University of Chicago Law School. He graduated summa cum laude from Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Arts in 2015, with a major in philosophy and a minor in psychology. Matt's studies have covered a broad range of topics, and he has taken each class as an opportunity to further develop his perspective and understanding of the world and others.

Matt cares passionately about building and supporting communities. This has led him to interest in becoming a Secular Celebrant, doing pro bono work during law school, and continuing to take leadership roles in on-campus and national groups.

Matt was the president of three university-sponsored student groups for multiple years prior to graduating, and and has extensive experience with conflict resolution and peacemaking. Matt is well known at Oregon State for his involvement in campus affairs and issues, and was affectionately nicknamed "The DiploMatt" as a result. Matt has successfully handled interactions with multiple campus preachers including "Shawn the Baptist" Holes and "Brother Jed" Smock, and even organized a counter-protest of over 5,000 people against the Westboro Baptist Church, who never even showed up the day of the event. Though he was not in a fraternity himself, he has also worked successfully with leaders of the Greek life community to address pressing, sensitive subjects, develop plans of action to improve education, and work proactively on multiple fronts.

Matt's experience both inside the classroom and out taking action in his communities has helped him to build skills in writing, speaking, and organizing. He cares deeply about everything that he does, and utilizes this passion to provide high-quality services that are tailored to each situation. He remains an active advocate for social justice and is LGBTQ+ inclusive.

Sean Omar Rivera is the current president of the Secular Student Alliance at the University of Texas at San Antonio and a student board member of the Freethinkers Association of Central Texas. Sean began his relationship with the SSA in 2011 when he joined his Houston high school SSA. Shortly after, he became an officer and gained valuable experience in leading a Secular organization in an environment with limited freedom of speech and a high resentment of nonreligious students. After seeking out and joining the SSA at UTSA, Sean spent his free time producing posters and activity ideas for the SSA before becoming the Public Relations officer and eventual president. Sean is an enthusiastic advocate for voter participation and a participant in Students United for Planned Parenthood at UTSA.
