Smithson Valley High School celebrates Scientific Awareness Week

Dear Friends,
Every February, many of our affiliates hold a Darwin Day celebration honoring Charles Darwin's scientific contributions to humanity. Last year, Smithson Valley High School in Bulverde, Texas didn’t even have an SSA affiliate group.
But this year, after existing less than a year, the Secular Student Alliance of Smithson Valley joined forces with the school’s Science, Math, and Book Clubs in a weeklong scientific celebration: Scientific Awareness week.
Not only did this week celebrate scientific discoveries in genetics, relativity, and evolution, it also decreased the stigma of secular students in their conservative community. One of the problems our affiliates face is that many of their peers think non-religious people are inherently bad or evil.
By partnering with other groups to spread science and reason, the SSA of Smithson Valley is normalizing secular students in their conservative community. These students are not being bullied and ostracized because of their lack of belief: rather, they are bringing the school together for a weeklong celebration of science and reason.
Your support of the Secular Student Alliance helps our growing network of over 400 affiliates put on events like these all over the country. Because of you, more and more students feel comfortable sharing and embracing their secular identity. Help this continue by making a gift today.
Remember, when you donate to the SSA, supporters Jeff Hawkins and Janet Strauss will match it dollar-for-dollar! You can support twice as many secular students with a gift today.
Thank you,
Mr. August E. Brunsman IV
