First-ever SSA Webinar: "What SSA Can Do For Your Group!"

Texas Freethought Convention Update

First Week of Classes: Activity Packets

The Ledge marks perhaps the first time in American cinema where a passionate atheist is a protagonist. Consider screening The Ledge on your campus.

The SSA is a cosponsor of the IFYC "Be Better Together for 9/11" service project toolkit. If you're thinking about a 9/11 service project, check it out!

Doctoral student Kevin Zimmerman is looking for non-heterosexual men in relationships with heterosexual women to participated in an IRB-approved study. Interested? Learn more!

Hello, my fellow Freethinkers!

School for semester schools is just starting to ramp up, so you know what that means? You guessed it! Activity Fairs! We have all kinds of awesome swag here in the office for your group, and all you have to do to get your hands on it is fill out a simple request form! Easy, right? And we have activity packets to help you plan for fairs and your meetings.

Coming up in October is the Texas Freethought Convention, where the SSA will be hosting a leadership track! If you are a student member of the SSA, you can get in at the low low price of only $59, less than half off the normal registration costs. Plus, who wouldn't want to hang out with PZ Myers and Richard Dawkins?

If you are a new leader receiving this email as a forward from a past leader, please let me know so we can get our records updated, and so you continue to receive updates from us. Also make sure to check out our Facebook Leaderspace: it's a great place to meet and interact with student leaders from across the country!

I love hearing from you, so feel free to contact me whenever you need to!
Nick

First-ever SSA Webinar: "What SSA Can Do For Your Group!"

Webinar! The SSA will be trying out a series of webinar-based leadership training sessions this semester, and we want you to be a part of it! (After all, we're doing this for you.) Our first ever session will be on Tuesday, August 30, 7:30 - 8:00pm EDT. (That's 4pm for you West Coast folks; those in the middle can figure it out.) While you need to register here to attend, it's 100% free!

This first webinar is a great way to kick off the year with your officers: "What the SSA Can Do For Your Group." We'll talk about the wide range of services and resources we offer and give a brief overview of how to use them. Again, it's 7pm EDT on Tuesday, August 30th. Don't forget to register - and don't forget to tell your officers, advisor, volunteers, leaders-in-training, and anyone else you think would be interested. We're excited about this event and would love to see you there!

PS - We'll be holding these every other week as we get going, and covering a huge range of interesting topics! Stay tuned!

Texas Freethought Convention Update

Wow! A week ago we announced the SSA Leadership Track at the Texas Freethought Convention. In one week, we've already filled 10% of the maximum number of student registrations - and this event isn't until October 7-9!

That means if you want to get in on this action, you need to do it sooner rather than later. To help you along, here's yet another reason to get registered for just $59 to the conference (that's $91 off the normal registration rate of $150): PZ Myers will be hanging out in the SSA game room for a few hours at one point doing an exclusive meet-greet-and-game with the student leaders!

There can be no doubt at this point that this will be our largest leadership track ever and, with the inclusion of so many student-exclusive events and with even more to come, it may very well be our most fun!

First Week of Classes: Activity Packets

School is getting back into session for most schools, which means activity fairs! A tradition at most universities (and many high schools) is an event where all the clubs/organizations get to table and make themselves visible to all the incoming students. This is one of the best chances you'll have over the next twelve months to introduce your group to several types of people:

1. Incoming students who may not know about your group.
2. Religious doubters who may be looking for a community outside that of their church.
3. Incoming freshmen from religious areas who don't even know that organized atheists are out there! We can tell you from working with high school students that there are a lot more people out there like this than you think.

Having a table at your school's activity fair is not only good for the growth of your group, but it's also good for all of these people listed above. Don't miss this valuable opportunity to find your group's next leaders!

As always, the SSA has your back. Not only will we send you tabling supplies, but we also have activity packets for your first few meetings. Get out and make it happen! We've also just added a new activity packet on screening The Ledge, a 2011 thriller pitting an atheist protagonist against a fundamentalist antagonist, on your campus.
