SSA 2014 Annual Conference Success!

We conclude our 2014 Annual Conference for the year. Again, we could not have done it without the help of all the volunteers, speakers, members, supporters, and most of all the students! We had almost 200 attendees at the conference in Columbus making our attendance grand total this year over 320! We were also proud to host service opportunities at both conferences for the first time. Be sure to look out for us next year for another round of empowering secular students to become leaders in the secular movement!

Last Chance To Register For SSA East!

It's your last chance to register online and guarantee conference books, backpacks, meals, airport rides, etc. for SSA East! Register by the end of Sunday July 6th to secure your spot!

We will also accept registration at the door the day of the conference, but that type of registration will cost you more money (and won't guarantee all the swag and other goodies).

Finally the BBC will be present at our conference to do radio and video interviews of students. They are doing stories about the growing secular population and are interested in your stories relating to discrimination in particular. If you are interested in being interviewed in either format or know some friends who are comfortable doing so, who will also be present at the conference, please contact Jamila Bey by email or phone 614 441-9588 ex101. They are aware that not everyone wants to be recorded and will either ask permission or request the appropriate release of individual attendees.

Brian Bolton Scholarship Due July 15th

The Freedom From Religion Foundation scholarship for college students age 25 and over is due in 2 weeks. Winners receive prizes of up to $3,000. Learn more about the contest, check out previous winners, and get submission details at the FFRF website.

Mandisa Thomas

Mandisa Thomas, a native of New York City, is a founder and current President of Black Nonbelievers, Inc. Although never formally indoctrinated into belief, Mandisa was heavily exposed to Christianity, Black Nationalism and a bit of Islam. As a child she loved reading, and enjoyed various tales of Gods from different cultures, including Greek and Ghanaian. “Through reading these stories and being taught about other cultures at an early age, I quickly noticed that there were similarities and differences between those deities and the God of the Christian Bible. I couldn’t help but wonder what made this God so special that he warrants such prevalence in today’s society,” she recalls.
