This Week: Registration Live, Darwin Day, Regional Speakers Bureau

Conference Registration Live

You may think it's a bit early to start preparing for the conference, but our motto is "Be Prepared." Okay, maybe that's not our motto, but it still makes sense! Our registration is now live (for both Vegas and Columbus), so sign up now!

Why wait? It's better to register now rather than letting that $39 (or $125, for a group of five -- what a deal!) burn a hole in your pocket. Who knows what you'll be tempted to spend it on if you wait? A new Furby? Car eyelashes? Vegan cookies to send to your favorite campus organizers? Register today for Las Vegas or Columbus!

Still not sure if you want to attend? Watch this sweet promo trailer and be blown away (then register)!

Happy Darwin Day!

It's here, it's here! It's finally Darwin Day (the 12th, technically tomorrow, but still). Hopefully you requested tabling supplies so your group can celebrate, but if not, you can still do something! You can take a look at the events listed on the Darwin Day website and see if there's anything in your area.

If not, you can always just throw something together quickly -- go to a local supermarket and pick up a generic birthday cake and eat it with your group, or perhaps watch a documentary about evolution. We have lots of ideas up on our Darwin Day activity packet. (You can also send a cute Darwin Day ecard on the Darwin Day website.)

Regional Speakers Bureaus

Now that our regional programs are up and running, we're thrilled to start offering regional-specific services, like Regional Speakers Bureaus. If you live in the Southeast, you can look at the Southeast Speakers Bureau, with great speakers like Zach Weinersmith, author of Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal Comics, Kelley Freeman (who spoke at last year's conference and was our 2011 intern), and Andy Thomson, author of Why We Believe in God(s): A Concise Guide to the Science of Faith.

We also have the Texas Regional Speakers Bureau, including awesome speakers like Elyse Anders, president of the Women Thinking Free Foundation, Zach Moore, a molecular biologist and the coordinator of Camp Quest Texas, and Beth Presswood, hostess of Godless Bitches podcast.

We'll keep you informed as more regions form!

Shop at Amazon and Support the SSA!

You know how the best part about the internet (well, aside from cat videos) is how easy shopping has become? If you need an obscure product, bam! There it is, right on the internet! And you can have it delivered right to your door! You don't even need to leave your house!

We love online shopping, and we bet you do too (especially when it comes time to buy textbooks). Did you know you can support the SSA just by using this Amazon.com link when you go to buy something? We'll recieve a percentage of your purchase at no charge to you! Now you can order all the Nutella you want, without feeling guilty, because you're helping support secular students! Update your bookmark and shop away!

Job Opportunities with SSA

This is what our days are like.
At least, some days.

Did you know the SSA is hiring? We're growing so rapidly we need more people to help us keep up! We're looking for three summer interns (one for graphic design, one for writing/resource development, and one communications intern), two part-time Regional Campus Organizers, and one part-time Texas Regional Campus Organizer.

We also have a bunch of opportunities with other organizations on our jobs page.  If you or someone you know is interested in starting a career in the secular movement, now's the time to apply!

Speak at SSA 2013 Annual Conference

Have you done something really awesome this year? Did your group have something go completely wrong, so you want to warn groups on how to do it better? Do you just like the sound of your own voice?

You're in luck! We are still accepting student speakers for BOTH of our annual conference locations this year! We still need volunteers, so don't be afraid that you "aren't good enough" – we still want to hear from you! Apply today and who knows, you might just become the next big voice of atheism. The deadline is March 1st, so don't put it off until the last minute!

Conference Speaker Lineup

Remember that time we're having two conferences this summer? We just wanted to remind you. In any case, the wait for the speaker lineup is over! We're announcing the speakers right now!

Our Las Vegas conference is June 21-23rd, and the link to the speakers page up is on our website.

Our Columbus conference is July 12-14th, and the list of speakers at the Columbus conference is also available.

Are you so excited? Good, you should be! Do you have questions? We have a handy Conference FAQ available here! Don't forget to submit your application for Leadership Travel Aid or to apply for your chance to speak at either conference!

SSA Gamers Group

Do you like video games? Are you a secular student (we sure hope so, otherwise why are you getting this email?)? We're trying to connect our students, and what better way to do that than by having a group for gamers? We have a Facebook Group for gamers where you can talk about games, or post your Xbox Live or Playstation Network name. We also have a Steam Community Group, and sometimes we host events, like games Team Fortress 2 or Civilization VI. Join in and have some fun!

Darwin Day Resolution

In honor of this year’s Darwin Day, our friends at the American Humanist Association worked with Representative Rush Holt (NJ) to introduce a resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives “expressing support for designation of February 12, 2013, as Darwin Day and recognizing the importance of science in the betterment of humanity.”

If you'd like to see this resolution passed, we encourage you to contact your local representative and let them know you support this piece of legislation!

Speaking of Darwin Day, you can also send a fun Darwin Day e-card to your friends and take a look at our Darwin Day Activity Packets to get ideas for how your group can celebrate the birthday of one of the most influential scientists ever! If your group is hosting an event, you can add it to the Darwin Day event calendar, too!

This Week: Speakers Bureau Advance Funding, Lobby Day 2013, Jobs

Speakers Bureau Advance Funding

If you've ever hosted a Speakers Bureau event, you know the SSA will help pay for it. In the past, it's all been on a reimbursement basis. We are now giving away Speakers Bureau funding before events happen!

This will help groups who don't have large bank accounts already to bring speakers to their campus. There are some guidelines your group must reach to qualify, so take a look and see if this will help your group get a speaker this semester!

Lobby Day 2013

Interested in getting your group more active at a more national level? The Secular Coalition for America is hosting another Lobby Day in our nation's capital in order to help get secularists a chance to talk to their representatives in Congress. Lobby Day will be on April 25th, 2013, in conjunction with the SCA's Secular Summit.

The day includes training on how to lobby effectively, information on current topics that affect secularists, lunch, and an appointment with your state representative's office. If you register before February 15th, you can get the early bird rate of $50.

If your group wants to take a road trip to do this, you can apply for a grant from us to offset costs.

Jobs and Opportunities

Are you interested in becoming the next Texas Regional Campus Organizer?  Want an awesome summer internship?  Or would you rather be a part of the first Humanist service corps? There are tons of opportunities available in the secular movement right now!
