Back to School Week

Spring Semester is finally here and now all of you are back in school!books

Start the semester strong by looking for an activity fair where you can table. SSA provides free tabling supplies for your group. You can also do a flyer campaign around campus. Just please abide by your campus' flyer policies when doing so. We have tons of premade flyers available on our website for you to choose from.

Also look at our activity packet for tabling, detailing all you need to know to successfully get your name out there and encourage fellow students to join your group.

Darwin Day

Darwin is one of the great emancipators of the mind. I like to see him asmonkies the one who struck the final nail in the coffin of the God explanation. Insofar that he forever changed the world for the better, directing science (and therefore the mass consciousness) in the right direction, we ought to celebrate his life and accomplishments.

Darwin Day is February 12th, in just a few more weeks. You can see if the International Darwin Day Foundation has any events close to your area by clicking here. Also check out our Darwin Day metapacket for ideas if your group wants to put on their own event.

U.S. House Grading From Secular Coalition

The Secular Coalition for America has released the 2011 report card for members of Congress and from their perspective, House member grades are abysmally low. They rated each member of Congress according to how they voted on seven church/state pieces of legislation (or amendments). Feel free to use this information for voting, lobbying etc. We pay these people to represent us after all, so they might as well do their job.

You can check out the report card, how they calculated the results and other specifics here.

Hi, everyone!

Those of you on quarter terms have hopefully settled in by now, and the rest of you should be gearing up to get started!

We're trying out a new program this spring, since the webinars weren't working out as well as we had hoped.  So we'll be trying Campus Organizer Live Chat Sessions - free Q&A sessions where we'll answer anything you have to throw at us.  Right now, though, we need your schedules, so take a moment to fill out the quick survey and let us know what times work for you.

We also have some great opportunities: the American Atheists Founders Scholarship deadline is January 31, so read up and put in your application today!  And we're excited to be a part of the Secular Coalition for America's Lobby Day in conjunction with the Reason Rally in March - join us!

Coming up soon: Darwin Day (Feb. 12) and Ask-an-Atheist Day (Apr. 19) so get your planning caps on and hold some great events.  (And then send us your pictures!)

Don't hesitate to contact us if you need anything, and keep up the great work!

Cheers!
Lyz

CO Live Chat Session Debut

The Campus Organizing Team is planning to start regularly scheduled chatmonthly live chat sessions in the afternoon to answer all your questions! But first we need to know when everyone is available to chat. We set up a Doodle® Pool in order to get a feel of when most of you will have a little time to throw a question or two at us. The sessions are to be 2 hours long to give a little wiggle room.

AA Founders' Scholarship Deadline

The American Atheists Founder's Scholarship deadline is quickly approaching. If you've performed outstanding activism for atheism in themoney past this scholarship is for you. Perhaps you've done something that has garnered interest in the press or changed the perception of atheists at your college or at large? If so, you should fill out their application and send it in. The reward is $2,000 for first place and $1,000 for each runner up. The Founder's scholarship is open to students currently enrolled in a university and to high school seniors who will be attending college next year.

For more information check out the American Atheists scholarship webpage.

SCA Lobby Day

Amanda Knief may not be on our Speakers Bureau anymore but that doesn't mean you won't have opportunities to learn from the one and only lobbyist representing non-theist issues. On March 23rd, the day before Reason Rally, The Secular Coalition of America is set to host Lobby Day for Reason. A day where you can learn the skills on how to directly lobby to your Representatives the issues that are important to us.

Hey gang!

Man, it's awesome to be back in the office. I just spent a few weeks at my childhood home in Arkansas, where family trees don't branch.

The family tree of atheism, however, is diverse, and it includes a whole host of different lables for different situations. We tossed a few of them in your This Week email.

Vacations are winding down. Soon we'll be back to hosting speakers, watching movies with other godless folk, and hitting the books. 2011 was perhaps our greatest ever all across the nation!  Not only did we run gaggles of events, but we increased our number of affiliates from 234 to 312!

I think 2012 is going to be even better. It starts with the Reason Rally in March. Do you know how your group is going to get there? Stay tuned for ways the SSA will be able to help.

Happy 2012 everybody!
JT

Our Family Tree

The following was written by Sam Jackson.

There are many people who encompass the non-theistic community and treesome of them don’t even know they are there. You could say there are two kinds of atheists – those who know they are atheists and those who don’t. The ones who know can further be divided into those who admit as much and those who refuse to make said pronouncement. In any case the phrase non-theist is an umbrella term used to include everyone who does not assert some sort of belief in god(s). The breakdown of non-theist constituents is of course much more complicated:

Atheist – The most candid term but also one of the most divisive. Technically all non-theists are atheists, the prefix “a” meaning without or not and theist meaning someone who believes in god(s). A simple application of the law of contradiction states that either you believe in at least one god or you don’t. Atheists are those who are without belief. We have of course complicated the word to have both an inclusive an exclusive meaning. The exclusive meaning is used to express explicit disbelief in god(s), sometimes called strong atheism, while the inclusive meaning expresses all types of non-belief.

Agnostic – A misunderstood term. Originally agnostics claimed that all knowledge is uncertain. Contemporarily agnostics assert they don’t know if god(s) exist or not. Given the word’s popular modern usage, one could say there are technically agnostic atheists as well as agnostic theists.

Ignostic –The most fascinating of the bunch. In a conversation with a theist I had not too long ago, he cited the usual argument atheists give and agreed that it was understandable that god is not detectable. My reply was that the problem was actually much harder for theists. The biggest question is not where is god, but what is god. Ignostics say that god(s) must be adequately defined before any claims of it (like their existence) are to be made. In one of Christopher Hitchen’s debates he said that in many ways the statement there is no god is as meaningless as there is one. If the word itself is meaningless no claims can be made of it. Ignostics may also be called theological non-cognitivists and arise out of the larger verificationist and logical positivist movements.

Apatheist – As expressed in this article apatheists are those who don’t care for the whole discussion. They focus only on real tangible things in life and see the search for applying a religious or non-religious label to oneself as a worthless endeavor. There is complete indifference to the whole issue.

Anti-Theists – This is the most activist term. Anti-theists are people who actively seek to stop theistic belief as they see theism as deleterious in some way or another. Most people introduced as the “new atheists” are part of the anti-theist camp.

It is important to note that although a non-theist may identify with any given subcategory, it may only be a temporary phase. I would have never called myself an atheist unless I knew of the more inclusive definition and made it clear that I did not deny god, I simply lacked belief. As time passed however the difference became less and less staggering. Therefore the important thing is to try to make a group that is as inclusive as possible to all non-theists and to not to get too caught up in definitions or labels.

If something comes up, we need to be able to contact you - whether it be about speaker opportunities, cool events, group requirements, free stuff, or if something else comes up we can't quite predict at the moment.
