SSA Annual Conference Travel Information and Options
This page covers several different options for you (and your group!) to travel to the Annual SSA conference in Columbus, Ohio. If you have questions about the below options or would like to ask about a different one, please feel free to contact us at organizer(AT)secularstudents(DOT)org.
At the bottom of this page, you will find more detailed information on ideas to obtain monetary assistance.
By far the most common way groups and individuals get to our conference is by car/van/etc. If you have, or someone in your group has, a vehicle capable of getting you to Columbus, OH then that might be your best choice. This is made especially easier if there are several people riding in the vehicle who can split gas costs for the trip. If you are driving to Columbus and you have open seats to filll, be sure to check our Ride Share board. If you need a ride to Columbus, you can try to find a ride on that board as well. To log into the board, use the password "ssarocks".
The address for the conference location is 1739 N. High Street Columbus, OH 43210 (it is the Ohio Union). There is parking available at the dorms as well as at the Union. However, please be aware that the Union's parking garages are pay-to-park.
See the bottom of the page for funding opportunities.
Columbus has a major airport (Port Columbus Intl Airport - CMH) which is easily accesible from where you will be staying for the conference (OSU campus or nearby). Airfare is not usually too bad if you book a decent amount of time in advance. However, airfare is almost always going to be more expensive than traveling by road.
When you register for the conference, you will have the opportunity to tell us your flight information so that we can schedule a pick-up time for you. That way you do not have to worry about paying for a cab or anything like that. We will be providing a shuttle to and from the airport on Friday and Sunday. You can request a pick up until July 3rd; after that you are on your own so be sure to let us know before then!
Of course, the SSA will also offer leadership travel aid to assist in costs. We also recommend checking with your campus, as said above, to see if funding is available.
If you would like to put in a pick-up request, please fill out this form.
There are two options to come in by bus to Columbus. Both Greyhound and Mega Bus have stops near campus. Mega Bus literally stops at the Ohio Union, where the conference will be held all weekend. Mega Bus is a ton cheaper than Greyhound, though MB stops in fewer cities and the stops often happen at awkward times of the day. Greyhound is a bit pricier and often has issues getting in at the scheduled time. These are issues to be aware of when considering these transportation options.
Greyhound has a station in Downtown Columbus (111 E Town St
Columbus, OH 43215) and also stops on campus at the Ohio Union (1739 High St Columbus, OH 43210). The Downtown station is about a 15-20 minute drive from OSU's campus. Please be aware that our shuttle is only going to the airport. If you come in at that station, you will have to find your own way to campus (by taxi or by bus transfer).
As mentioned with the other options, always be on the lookout for opportunities to get funding support.
There are more options to seek potential funding than you might necessarily think of. For a detailed list of ideas, please check out this page.
